Running Rithmic on a VPS: Location Is the Whole Point
Most traders meet Rithmic through a prop firm: pass an evaluation, get funded, and somewhere in the fine print discover that every order flows through Rithmic's Chicago-area gateways. That geography is the entire case for hosting your trading stack there too. Here is how the pieces — R|Trader Pro, platform connections, R|API+ — fit together on a server.
The Round Trip Your Orders Actually Take
When you click buy in NinjaTrader connected to Rithmic, the order travels from your platform to a Rithmic gateway, on to the exchange, and the fill confirmation retraces the path. Running the platform at home adds your entire ISP route to Chicago on both legs — often 30ms from the US coasts and well over 100ms from Europe or Asia. Running it on our Chicago servers collapses that leg to a metro-area hop.
For a discretionary swing trader this is invisible. For scalpers working the DOM in R|Trader Pro, or automated systems where stop placement races market movement, it is the difference between the price you saw and the price you got. It also removes the household failure modes — Wi-Fi drops, ISP resets — that Rithmic's session management is notoriously unforgiving about mid-trade.
Prop-Firm Evaluations on a Server
Evaluation accounts from Apex, Take Profit Trader, Bulenox and similar firms are Rithmic credentials underneath. Traders host them on a VPS for three reasons: the connection is steadier during the exact volatile sessions evaluations are usually attempted in; multiple evaluations can run in parallel in separate platform instances with isolated data directories; and trailing-drawdown rules punish disconnections that leave positions unmanaged.
Sizing follows instance count: one evaluation with NinjaTrader or Quantower runs on Swing ($45/mo); two or three concurrent evaluations sit comfortably on Momentum ($85/mo); larger multi-account operations belong on Flow ($175/mo). Always check your firm's own rules on concurrent evaluations and automation before scaling up.
R|Trader Pro, Platform Front-Ends, and R|API+
Most traders don't chart in R|Trader Pro — they run it beside a front-end. The common pattern on our servers: R|Trader Pro open for account state and flatten-all control, with NinjaTrader, Quantower, or Bookmap doing the charting against the same login. Rithmic limits how many simultaneous sessions a login may hold, so consolidating everything onto one machine also keeps you inside those limits instead of fighting phantom-session lockouts between home PC and server.
